Permeable Pavers at Hort Park

In this post, we are highlighting the latest in our product range, permeable pavers.

For normal pavers, water runs on top of the paver, similar to a bitumen or tile installation. For permeable paving, the pavers are porous such that the water can flow directly into the sub base. Typically, there is a water retention tank or subsoil pipes to redirect the water into the drains. The pavers thus act as a second holding area for the water to prevent water ponding and secondary storage during the rainy season.

The link to the relevant brochure is here. It showcases the different types of permeable paving systems to ensure that the desired outcome is achieved.

We also have a fun video that highlights the effectiveness of the product compared to the typical paving installation.

Alternatively, a good resource for the latest news in permeable paving is via Interpave, the precast concrete paving and kerb association in the UK.

Permeable Pavers at Hort Park Dropoff Point 3

The installation for this project would have been fairly challenging for the following factors:

  • Uneven terrain
  • Weight of product (approximately 33kg per piece!)
  • Large size of product that requires special tools for cutting
  • The winding footpaths require constant adjustment to ensure that the installation remains straight.

The permeable pavers were chosen for this project to act as a secondary water storage for the several large storm drains directly outside the job site.

The design intent for this particular project was to use the large format pavers, which is only manufactured in 60mm thickness. Further, there is sufficient vehicular access as the driveways are right next to the footpaths so there is little to no possibility of vehicular access.

For most footpath installations, 60mm thickness is sufficient, especially if it is 99% unlikely to have vehicular traffic. For plazas and key hubs where there is a >10% chance of vehicular traffic (e.g. food trucks, dentist vans, popup shops), our recommendation is to use the 80mm thickness.

Typically, we use the small format permeable pavers in either Quadpave 100x200mm or Unipave 223x115mm for installations in Singapore. This ensures a much faster installation process as the individual pieces are much lighter (4-5kg). The installation is also more secure as the joints are not too large.  There is also opportunity for design flexibility either with use of different colours or with a cohesive design that flows through to the carparks and driveways as these sizes are available in 80mm and 100mm thickness.

Hexagon Paving Installation at HDB Neighbourhood Centre

In this post, we are highlighting a unique job using the hexagonal Trafika shape in a multitude of different colours to provide indicators to shape the human traffic.

The project was part of the Neighbourhood Renewal Program for a HDB Neighbourhood Centre. It was definitely a challenging installation as it was done on a slope on a very tight schedule. Further, we had to be mindful of the disruption due to the high human traffic in the area.

Hexagon Interlocking Pavers Installation at HDB

Large Format Pavers Installation

The design was pretty unique as it consisted of various lines of red, black and grey. Due to the large format of the interlocking pavers, we faced difficulties when cutting around the lamp posts and termination points.

However, as we are the only interlocking paving specialists with our own team of installers, we did not have any issues dealing with the rectification works as we were able to deploy our own in-house experts to identify issues and resolve them quickly.

Typically, we are committed to a site visit within 24 hours of any highlighted issues at site. This consists of a member of the executive team visiting the site to identify the source of the issue and taking photographs to accurately capture the current conditions. If it is within our scope, we will send a team down to fix it within the week.

The Hexagon Trafika information can be found in our brochure. Our full range of brochures can be found here:

We are starting to see an uptick in requests for this unique shape due to the differentiated look and feel. However, professionals looking to specify this product need to consider the termination, design around the gratings, and design around kerbs.

Interlocking Paving Dropoff Point and Driveway at Hotel

For the first post in 2017, we are reviewing a unique interlocking paving installation at a hotel in central Singapore!

We used a mix of Quadpave 200×100 in a rectangular shape and Prime Pave 200×200 in a square shape to create a tessellation or repeating pattern. The two main colours used here is grey and black. This is typical of installations looking to mimic the look of granite.

The picture above is a close up of the design using the grey Quadpave and the black Prime Paver.

We also included the grasspave by the side of the driveway. This product is slightly different from the typical grass pavers seen at the carpark lot. Nevertheless, the functionality of the product remains the same, providing aeration to the ground below and a touch of green.

Interlocking Pavers Driveway at Canberra Condominium

This is a throwback post as we look at how one of our condominium projects have held up since the installation two years ago.

Due to the nature of the product, there will be slight differences in the tonality of the installation. However, the colour tends to “season” after a while. This means that it will start to take on the rumbled more natural look with time. This is an example of one of those installations.

Most private developments would shy away from the choice of red to avoid the “HDB look”. However, this shows how the red and black pattern can be used to match the swirls on the basketball court.

The black and red installation would have appeared very bright initially, with strong contrast between the two colours on the opposite ends of the spectrum. However, with time, it has developed a more rustic charm. This is also due to the design which has approximately 70% black with 30% red. The slight majority of the black ensures that the red does not overwhelm the overall look. This is key for condominium projects.

The profile used is the typical Unipave shape. This providesthe strongest interlocking properties of the profiles due to its zig zag edges. It has held up well over time, especially since this condominium had a number of ramps from the entrance to the multi-storey carpark.

Interlocking Pavers at Sembawang HDB

We’re highlighting a unique HDB project with supply and install of interlocking pavers for the driveway, drop off points and pedestrian footpaths.

At BA Contracts, we provide supply and install for multiple HDB projects. Typically, these are the ones showcased in the main image, using Unipave 80mm in the standard colours of red, grey and black, . For larger projects, we provide design services to the client as well.

As the specialists in this segment, we are familiar with the typical HDB installation details such as the termination patterns at the kerb and manhole as well as carpark lot designs.

Details such as the linkway hump can be constructed using interlocking pavers as well. Usually, this requires the use of yellow interlocking pavers to provide the necessary contrasts. Based on the shop drawing, we will do the necessary works to create the linkway hump to match the overhead shelter. This can be constructed straight across or can be at an angle, depending on the direction of the overhead shelter.

For this HDB project, we also provided the pavers for the sheltered walkways and external footpaths as per the consultant’s design specifications.

A mixture of grey and black square pavers was used for the foot paths and sheltered walkways. This provided a clean and coherent look, while differentiating the design from the vehicular driveways.

For walkways, 60mm thickness is sufficient to withstand the human traffic. As such the range of products available is wider, allowing consultants to create a unique feel for each project. For example, in the open area, we used the boomerang profile to create more texture in the design.

Interlocking Paver for School Project at Bukit Timah

We’re highlighting a recent school project where we provided rectification work for the interlocking paver due to the addition of a new building. During the construction process of the new building, the heavy vehicles damaged the existing interlocking blocks and required a new installation of the interlocking pavers.

The products used are Unipave 80mm, which is the most common interlocking paving shape found in Singapore. This is due to its ridges which provide the strongest interlocking properties. It is installed in a herringbone pattern to provide some visual interest in the design with grey and black outlines.

Typically, the pavers used for driveways are 80mm thick in order to withstand the load from the vehicular traffic. However, once installed, heavy vehicles such as skid loaders, boom lifts etc, should not enter the driveway. The 80mm interlocking paver is not made to withstand such heavy loads which will result in cracks and sunken areas. These heavy vehicles are also prone to oil spills, creating irreversible stains.

For carpark lots, we typically use the 100mm product to provide better support for the parked vehicle.

The products used in this project is the Unipave 80mm in the standard colours of Red, Grey and Black. The supporting photo highlights the termination pattern for the herringbone installation.

Square Pavers at Hillview Condominium

We’re highlighting another installation of the Prime Pavers – square shaped interlocking pavers for another condominium installation in Singapore.

The designers chose the square interlocking pavers for the driveway and external visitors’ carpark to match the small square tiles used at the entrance of the condominium.

A combination of paint and different coloured pavers were used to mark the car park lots. To ensure a higher interlocking function for the carpark lots, the typical unipave with the zig zag edge was used, matching the grass paver that provides aeration for better drainage. This is often used to comply with the government requirements of at least 30% aeration and passes the water absorption test, transverse strength test and compressive strength test.

Products used

Prime Pavers for the driveway: 200x200x80mm

Super Uni Grasspave: 453x453x100mm

Super Unipave: 225x111x100mm

We were able to install interlocking pavers of different heights in the same area. This application varies depending on the site condition. Our team of specialized installers will be able to evaluate and assess the suitability. This enables designers to choose from a wider range of shapes for the driveway. In addition, there are opportunities for cost management as the 80mm products will typically be slightly cheaper than the 100mm products.

Square Pavers Installation at Newton Condominium

To maintain the benefits of interlocking pavers (quick installation and minimal maintenance) but with a different look and feel to differentiate from the usual design, square pavers were used for this condominium installation. A mix of greys and blacks were used in an unusual block pattern that provided cues for directionality without being too obvious about it. Typically, for such projects, the neutral colours are more popular to imitate the cobblestone/granite visual.

The hump was also built using interlocking pavers, albeit in a different shape, using alternating yellow and black pavers for greater visibility and awareness for pedestrians and drivers.

The pictures below show the use of the perforated aeration slabs for the car park lots with cow grass planted to  fulfill the necessary drainage requirements. Each lot is outlined with black pavers for a more natural look and feel instead of using paint.

Permeable Paving Video

This is a great illustration of the benefits of permeable paving!

Permeable Paving is a great product for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). It addresses quantity by reducing and controlling the amount of runoff as well as quality by removing pollutants.

The video showcases the difference in the rate of runoff for the different types of pavers.

NeuPave vs Standard Paving – BA Contracts from Valerie on Vimeo.

This technology has been in use in the UK and Europe for the past decade and has enjoyed tremendous success in township developments and various educational institutes. It manages surface water close to where rainfall hits the ground, which is known as source control and is fundamental to SUDS philosophy. It helps to replicate green-field run-off characteristics from development sites as well as requiring no additional land take, which is particularly relevant for high density developments. Specifically, it can handle runoff from roof drainage and adjacent impermeable surfaces as well as rain falling on the permeable surface itself.

It minimizes potential water ponding issues regardless of the sub base used. Further, the different finishes allows for greater design flexibility in creating a built environment that looks natural.

Based on the CIRIA C609, 2004, the percentage removal of pollutants for permeable paving are:

  • total suspended solids: 60-95%
  • hydrocarbons: 70-90%
  • phosphorus: 50-80%
  • nitrogen: 65-80%
  • heavy metals: 60-95%

Further, based on the CIRIA C697, 2007, the water quality treatment potential

  • removal of total suspended solids: high
  • removal of heavy metals: high
  • removal of nutrients: high
  • removal of bacteria: high
  • treatment of suspended sediments & dissolved pollutants: high

As with most other interlocking paving installations, the maintenance requirements are very low. For permeable paving, there is minimal maintenance required. Experts project that there will be none for at least 5 years. Even if there is localised clogging, it is obvious and easily resolved by power washing.
